Samsung Galaxy S ‘Value Pack’ Firmware Update Released In Korea

, , , ,

A couple of weeks ago, Samsung had announced that after it starts rolling out the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Galaxy S II, it will also roll-out a new firmware update for the Galaxy S. The new firmware update will not bring Ice Cream Sandwich update, but instead is a ‘value pack’ upgrade which contains some Ice Cream Sandwich.

This includes Face Unlock, an improved TouchWIZ launcher, a new lock screen, faster performance and the ability to click pictures while shooting a video. The Photo editor found in the Galaxy S II, is also bundled in this update. At the moment, this ‘value pack’ firmware update is only available for the Galaxy S owners in Korea.

Samsung will hopefully start rolling out the update to other regions of the world soon. To install the firmware on their handset, users need to use Samsung’s KIES 2.0 software.  Sammy will also be releasing the ‘value pack’ firmware update for other Android powered Galaxy handsets including the Galaxy M, Galaxy Tab and Galaxy K/U.

Go Dev Team Releases Go Backup; Titanium Backup Just Got a Very Serious Competitor!

, ,

Despite’s Android ‘open’ nature, there is no way for non-rooted Android handset owners to make a complete backup of their phone’s data. To take a complete backup of your Android handset, including your installed apps along with its data, users must have root access on their handset.

Titanium Backup is the app for all rooted users to make a backup of their phone. The app is one of the most popular paid apps in the Android Market, and is updated frequently. Sadly, Titanium Backup is not an all in one backup solution since it does not make a backup of user’s personal data like contacts and SMS’s.

Last week, the popular Go Dev team has released a new app in the Android Market, which looks to dethrone Titanium Backup from its position. The app, GO Backup, allows users to make a complete backup of their contacts, SMS, installed apps (only for rooted users) and much more. Another advantage of the app is its ability to backup the settings and preferences of any other Go app installed on your system, which will definitely be appreciated by Go app users.

Two of the biggest advantages of GO Backup over Titanium Backup are its UI and price. Unlike Titanium Backup, which looks down right horrible and confusing, GO Backup has a very polished UI and is very easy to use. The final nail in the coffin of Titanium Backup by the Go Locker is its price – Free. Yes, like every other Go app released by the Go. Dev team, even GO Locker is available as a free download!

Archos G9 Gets a Bug Fixing Software Update; Fixes Bugs Introduced In ICS Update!

Remember the Archos G9 Ice Cream Sandwich update? Well, apparently the update while adding many new features and enhancements, also introduced some new bugs. Post the update, Archos G9 users faced Wi-Fi connection issues on their tablet, with the tablet refusing to connect to any Wi-Fi network or disconnecting frequently.

There were other issues as well, like the HDMI output not working properly, VPN connection failing and the touch screen not responding to multi-touches properly. The battery life of the tablet was also affected, because of the device not going into suspend mode properly once Bluetooth was enabled. Thankfully, Archos has been quick to react to the complaints of its users, and has released a new firmware update for its tablets that fixes the above issues. Below is the full change-log of the update -:

  • Wi-Fi: fix slow throughput and disconnections happening on some access points
  • HDMI: solve no sound or no video output issue on some TVs
  • Bluetooth: make sure Bluetooth does not prevent device suspend
  • VPN: fix VPN connection failing
  • Touchscreen: avoid loss of first finger touch while tapping with second finger
The update is already live, and Archos G9 owners can download the update manually by going to Settings -> About and then selecting the Software Updates option.
